Nesting Boxes

These are a few of the nesting boxes I have put out for blue tits, great tits, and house sparrows. The hexagonal ones were located throughout the Burren in Co. Clare, Ireland 2010-2012. I added a slight twist to the idea of collaboratively making sculpture with the birds, placing various materials around the nesting boxes in the hopes that the birds would use them to build their nests. The materials ranged from dyed wool, thread, copper wire, plastic, plastic coated wire, seaweed, synthetic sponge, brightly dyed feathers and hair. A few bits of wool were taken but for the most part the birds stuck to traditional materials - moss, hair, small downy feathers. The square nesting boxes, located in Co. Kildare, held the knitted nest jumpers from 2013-2016.
