Collaborations with Blue Tits (2011)

For this project I have built, from sustainably sourced wood, a series of 25 nesting boxes for great and blue tits. The boxes, located throughout the Burren in County Clare, Ireland, provide artificial habitats for these birds in the hopes of bolstering their population within this region. The boxes are built in the shape of a hexagon, a shape found throughout the natural world , in snowflakes, basalt formations, honeycomb and in DNA structures to name a few. At the end of the nesting season, the hexagonally shaped nests must be removed so that the birds will return the following season. The result is evidence of a mutually beneficial relationship and a collaborative arts practice.
