Collaboration with the Irish Black Bee (2012)

As many hives today are affected by the varroa mite and colony collapse disorder, bee population has become drastically reduced in the past few years. Honeybees are incredibly important to the biodiversity of the natural environment and humans as well. As the main pollinators of this planet they are responsible for over one third of all the food we as humans consume. Non-commercial or small scale bee keeping has been found to produce honeybees that are more resilient to diseases and mites. As more and more smaller hives are started, the gene pool of the bee is strengthened leading to healthier bee population and a bolstering of the biodiversity of animal species in general. Using the Barefoot Beekeeping method and a top bar hive I am creating sculptures in collaboration with the Native Irish Black Bee.
